About Kevin Simpson BA(Hons)

Primarily I'm a graphic designer, but I also have a passion for photography, colour and composition...

I have been photographing what I see around me for as long as I can remember. My first camera was a Kodak Brownie 127, rescued from a rusty metal trunk of junk in the garden of an aunt. I used black and white film because it was cheap for my parents to have processed, rather than for any artistic reasons and I remember friends and family remarking that my snaps had no people in them. I soon moved on to a 110 instamatic and took colour pictures.

I was always thrilled with the act of composing a scene in the viewfinder, snapping it and waiting to see the outcome. However I was also almost always disappointed with the fuzzy, grainy results.

Whilst at college studying Graphic Design I splashed out on a 35mm Fujica ST 605n SLR and a couple of lenses and filters to help me with the photography parts of my course. I was still frustrated with the slow cumbersome methods of the old film, chemicals and darkened room procedures and actually did very little photography for several years after graduating.

I didn't realise it, but I was just biding my time until the digital photography era Kicked in. I was an early adopter and have been experimenting with digital images since their low resolution beginnings in the early 1990s. Now I can take a picture, get it onto my Apple Mac and out of my photo printer in about two minutes.

I have the software equivalents of a fully equipped processing facility and darkroom, and can combine images, retouch, recolour and tweak my pictures as much as I like. This has finally given me the creative freedom I have always craved and I can make my images emerge from the printer exactly the way I had imagined them when I pressed the camera's shutter button.

Take a look at my pictures, and buy the ones you like; I'll probably spend the money on bigger and better camera equipment!
